When it comes to etiquette I don’t really think there’s anything in the way of social rules.

I comment on posts if I can acknowledge what’s said w intention or contribute something of use; otherwise I’ll leave a like so they’re not voided, or just stare at it and think, if I don’t know what to do with that information.

So far someone will always read what you post based off the structure and small user base, but engagement styles vary by who’s reading it

I definitely try to have the same perspective on comments on here as well, I only try to comment when I have something that I think adds value to the post itself, or at least leave a like because it sucks to feel ignored so I wouldn't wish that on anyone.

and im glad that because of char's smaller userbase, the community seems more engaged and interactive. Because there are less of us, we try to pay more attention to each other. There is less of the bystander effect happening where everyone thinks that someone else will leave a comment so they don't have to. I love char especially because of its small userbase. It offers a whole new experience to any other social media precisely because there aren't millions and millions of users.

I do wonder how char will keep up with non-algorithmic approach when its userbase grows to 10,000 or a 100,000 or a million people. I kinda hope char continues being non-algorithmic even when it gets big because it'll make for a unique experience that most others don't offer.

Agreed; that reason is why I’ve added it to my web viewing rotation!

If it ever blows up and gets very heavy in the user base, I’m sure some changes will have to be made to accommodate it; if it ever gets too saturated though, I think it’ll lose its original appeal in pursuit of expansion, or just end up as another generic forum.

It’d be interesting to have a user cap and auto deactivation of inactive accounts (say 6 months or so); not for the sake of gatekeeping, but to keep the micro community active and accessible. It would also be cool to have multiples, so if one site was at a user cap, you could join another one with open slots. Like internet tribes without the tribalism, because there’s no uniform archetype for users.

Maybe not for char, but even as a general idea for a microblogging platform !

I wonder what the developer thinks about this idea, or if they're even open for us to make suggestions?

It would be cool if the developing team opens the floor for suggestions by the community, or possibly even asking members of the community, with the know-how to help develop char, so the users of char can really become a part of the effort. (hint hint, I'd be happy to join the team as a dev, if they'd be willing to have me, even if I only join as a volunteer)

The various chars are managed by a team of early char users.

That would kinda be cool, just as long as "the managers" don't crash out as soon as they taste a lil bit of power...if we can avoid that then I'd think this would quite a cool experiment to see if a social media can be kept fresh and engaging even as it gains tons more members, without becoming just another "algorithm is everything" type of app like most other social medias that exist rn.

@choom 🌟 is the one who made the site ! They added the colour options recently based on popular vote, so I’m sure they’re open to hearing different ideas; if anything, it’s good brain food for thought (・∀・) I am a tech dodo, but I do love thinking !

Thanks, i will keep you in mind. i have been thinking to put the front end of char on a public git repo. it will require some work as the whole site is one big repo right now and would need to be split up. happy you are enjoying the site :)

For linux distros I like arch, cachyos, fedora, omarchy, bazzite, linux mint, and endevouros. For me Kde and hyprland are the best DEs right now. I used to like ubuntu but it really feels like a mess now. Check out distrosea.com its a really cool site that let's you try linux distros in your browser

ooh I'd be excited to see how the code for the frontend of the site looks. Plus it'd be fun to write my own version of the backend and play around with different things on my own local version of the site as well. fun!!

And yeah, thank you for making char. I mean I knew I would like it but even I didn't predict I'd enjoy being on here this much!

and thank you for telling me about distrosea. That's such a convenient tool to find just the right distro for me! I've heard about most of the distros you've mentioned but I've never actually tried most of them, so Im super excited to give distrosea a whirl!
